Last year, fewer Spaniards installed solar panels on their homes, marking the first decrease since 2018 as subsidies lost their impact.
Analysts noted that lower energy prices and inflation’s strain on household budgets dampened enthusiasm for solar across Europe.
This effect is especially noticeable in Spain, where rooftop solar is still a relatively new market.
Javier Dominguez, technical director at Spanish renewable energy systems firm Cambio Energetico said, “We had in 2022 a market doped with subsidies, the war in Ukraine and market instability.”
“In 2023, there was a hangover from that,” Dominguez added.

In 2023, about 112,000 Spanish households installed solar energy setups, which is roughly half of the record level seen in 2022, according to the renewable lobby APPA.
