Ameresco SUNEL Energy Secures €303.4 Million EPC Contracts for Major Solar Projects in Romania

Ameresco SUNEL Energy SA, Ameresco, Inc.'s joint venture with international solar EPC contractor SUNEL Group, has executed €303.4 million worth of Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contracts for three large-scale solar parks in south-western Romania. With a combined capacity of 466 MWp, the projects are a milestone in Romania's transition from coal-based power generation.
Pivotal Move Toward Clean Energy and Coal Phase-Out
The new solar installations will replace a significant amount of the nation's coal energy, aligning with Romania's ambition to end coal use by 2032. When operational, the solar parks will reduce more than 734,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions per year, helping national and EU-wide net-zero ambitions.
Pete Christakis, President of East USA & Managing Director of Ameresco SUNEL Energy SA, said,"These projects exemplify our commitment to advancing renewable energy solutions and underscore the importance of Europe's growth and stability.”
He added, “By leveraging our expertise and resources, we are not only helping Romania achieve its clean energy goals but also reinforcing our strategic diversification across Europe.”

Project Scope and Design
The solar parks will feature more than 757,000 fixed-tilt solar modules, engineered to deliver high energy capture efficiency. Ameresco SUNEL Energy SA will oversee the full lifecycle of the projects, including design, procurement, construction, commissioning, and ongoing operation and maintenance.
The EPC contracts also represent a strategic collaboration with OMV Petrom, Romania’s largest energy company, underscoring cross-sector partnerships in the country's energy transformation.
The project will take 18 months to complete. Upon completion, the solar parks will be crucial in enhancing the renewable energy capacity of Romania and the energy independence and sustainability program of the country.
