Meadow Lake Tribal Council (MLTC) and Carbon Alpha have announced that their North Star project has successfully passed the preliminary assessment conducted by Puro. earth, making it the first carbon removal initiative in Canada to achieve this notable milestone.

This listing marks a significant advancement for Carbon Alpha’s bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS) project, which aims to address climate change challenges.

The preliminary assessment thoroughly evaluated the North Star project’s design, examining crucial elements such as technical specifications, environmental safeguards, community benefits, biomass sustainability, and lifecycle assessment.

This rigorous process ensures that the project meets stringent standards and operates effectively within the framework of carbon capture technology.

The successful completion of this assessment underscores North Star’s adherence to the Puro Standard and its Geological Stored Carbon methodology, further validating the project's credibility.




Joseph Kochanski, Head of Operations for Puro. earth Americas lauded the partnership between Carbon Alpha and MLTC, emphasizing the project’s role in supporting wildfire mitigation efforts in Saskatchewan through effective carbon dioxide removal (CDR) techniques.

Kochanski expressed his enthusiasm for the project's advancements, praising Carbon Alpha for passing the preliminary assessment and looking forward to the next steps in deploying the facility.
