DEWA Expands Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park to 3,860MW in Clean Energy Push
DEWA expands the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park to 3,860MW, reinforcing Dubai's commitment to a sustainable, carbon-free energy future.

HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), has announced that the total production capacity of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park has now increased to 3,860 megawatts (MW), marking a major step in the emirate’s push for a sustainable green economy. This increase includes 800MW from the sixth phase of the solar park, which was added earlier this year.

The park’s growth reflects DEWA’s commitment to accelerating the transition towards clean and renewable energy. Clean energy now constitutes about 21.5% of DEWA's total energy production capacity, contributing significantly to the UAE’s sustainability goals.

Al Tayer said, “Our strategies and action plans are inspired by the vision and directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to accelerate the transition towards a sustainable green economy and enhance Dubai’s position as a leading global hub for clean and renewable energy.

He added, “The Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park is our key project to realise this vision and achieve the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050 and the Dubai Net Zero Carbon Emissions Strategy 2050, which aim to provide 100% of the emirate’s energy production capacity from clean sources by 2050. By 2030, the solar park's production capacity will reach 7,260MW, with clean energy making up 34% of DEWA’s energy mix. This will reduce approximately eight million tonnes of carbon emissions annually,”

Key Milestones in the Solar Park’s Development

The Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park has achieved several key milestones since its launch. Phase 1 began in 2013 with 13MW using photovoltaic (PV) panels. Phase 2, completed in 2017, added 200MW and marked the region’s first project using the Independent Power Producer (IPP) model.

In 2020, Phase 3 delivered 800MW with single-axis solar tracking for higher efficiency. Phase 4, completed in 2023, introduced a 950MW hybrid of Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) and PV technologies. That same year, Phase 5 added another 900MW using PV. Phase 6, currently underway in 202, will contribute 1,800MW, making it the largest to date.

Future Plans and Expansion

The Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park will reach 7,260MW by 2030, providing 34% of DEWA’s energy mix and cutting 8 million tonnes of emissions annually. Phase 7 will add up to 2,000MW and include 1,000MW of battery storage for 6 hours, making it one of the world’s largest solar-plus-storage projects.
