The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) announced that it will provide a €25.1 million loan to Elektroprivreda Bosne i Hercegovine (EPBiH), Bosnia and Herzegovina’s largest electricity utility.

The funding will be directed towards the development and construction of a 50 megawatts-peak (MWp) solar power plant on a former coal ash landfill site.

Alongside its own financing, the EBRD has facilitated additional funding for the project, with UniCredit Bank d.d. contributing a parallel loan of €15 million.

The combined loan proceeds will be used to develop, build, and operate two adjacent solar power plants (SPPs) in the municipality of Gračanica, each with a total capacity of 50 MWp.

As part of the initiative, the EBRD is backing a 2050 technical cooperation program to thoroughly evaluate various decarbonisation scenarios for EPBiH.

This assessment will cover the impact on EPBiH’s operations, financial needs, planning, project execution frameworks, and stakeholder communication.

Additionally, another technical cooperation effort will assist EPBiH in collaborating with authorities to establish new educational standards in renewable energy, emphasizing a just transition to address workforce management issues linked to decarbonisation.

Austria is providing project preparation and implementation, along with advisory support, through the Austrian Municipal Infrastructure Fund and the Austrian High-Impact Partnership on Climate Action. The EBRD’s Shareholder Special Fund is also contributing additional funds for technical assistance.

These projects and their associated technical support play a vital role in Bosnia and Herzegovina’s decarbonisation efforts. The country aims for a 43.6% share of renewable energy by 2030.
