Eni and MSC Group signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to foster joint initiatives in energy transition and decarbonisation. Claudio Descalzi, the CEO of Eni and MSC President Diego Aponte signed the agreement, expanding their longstanding partnership into new collaborative areas.

Eni, committed to carbon neutrality by 2050, and MSC, a transport and cruise services leader, have partnered for years. The new MoU broadens their partnership, aiming to decarbonise operations and promote sustainability, focusing on reducing emissions and fostering sector synergies.

Decarbonising Operations with Sustainable Energy Solutions

A key component of the MoU is exploring sustainable energy solutions for MSC’s transport and cruise fleets. The companies will consider using LNG, biofuels like HVO and bio-LNG, and renewable lubricants from bio-based materials. These efforts aim to significantly reduce the carbon footprint of MSC’s logistics and cruise operations.

Additionally, renewable energy will be evaluated to help decarbonise MSC's sites and facilities. The collaboration will focus on practical solutions to reduce the environmental impact of their fleets and operational infrastructures.

The partnership will aim to enhance synergies in logistics and transport, utilizing intermodal solutions across sea, rail, and road. The companies will explore ways to optimize the production and distribution of raw materials for biorefining, particularly agro-industrial feedstocks.

The MoU also looks into storing and transporting HVO biofuels to reduce emissions in the logistics chain. Additionally, the partnership includes offshore platform decommissioning, with Eni and MSC working together on safe dismantling to minimize environmental impact. The companies will launch joint research and development projects to drive innovation in energy transition technologies and sustainability, reducing emissions further.

Claudio Descalzi, Eni CEO said, "There are many parts of our economic and industrial systems where we must act to reduce emissions. The only way to succeed is by uniting the skills, resources and technologies across a range of stakeholders, for a widespread intervention in each of these key areas. This agreement marks the start of our collaboration with MSC in the decarbonisation of transport and cruise services."

Promoting Circular Economy Practices

The partnership focuses on circular economy principles, exploring renewable and recycled materials for MSC's fleet and improving onboard waste management. Furthermore, the agreement includes potential projects to redevelop decommissioned Eni assets. These initiatives will support sustainable practices across various sectors of the economy.
