Fidra Energy Secures Approval for UK’s Largest Battery Storage Project

Fidra Energy, the largest European battery energy storage system company, is developing its operations in Edinburgh, UK. It got planning consent recently for developing the flagship battery storage facility at Thorpe Marsh in Yorkshire. Its 1,400MW site will become Britain's largest and one of Europe's sites. The consent came from Doncaster Council on January 28th, 2025.

Boosting Local Economy and Supporting Clean Energy Transition

The Thorpe Marsh project will be the backbone in aiding the UK achieve its clean energy goals. Upon completion, it will be able to generate power for as many as 800,000 homes at peak demand for electricity. The construction process will provide hundreds of jobs both during the building and later running of the plant, thereby feeding into the local economy.

The battery storage facility will utilize lithium-ion battery systems that Sungrow will supply. The project will sit on about 55 acres of land that was previously part of a coal station site, next to a National Grid substation. The project will achieve FID in April 2025, while the first battery systems will start their live operations in early 2027.

A Key Milestone in the UK's Clean Energy Journey

Chris Elder, Fidra Energy’s Chief Executive Officer, said, "Thorpe Marsh is one of the most exciting infrastructure projects in the world and we are delighted to have achieved this important milestone in its development phase."

He added, “As the largest battery energy storage site in the UK, the project will help turbocharge the UK’s ambitions of achieving a clean power system providing critical flexibility to store energy when there is excess renewable generation and release this when needed.”

This milestone will catapult Fidra Energy to prominence in the quest for renewable and energy storage alternatives in the United Kingdom, constituting a marked contribution to a clean energy infrastructural structure within the country.
