California-based Fortera announced that it is teaming up with Japan's Sumitomo Corporation to accelerate its carbon reducing ReCard technology in Asia. The partnership targets the Asia region as it accounts for 73% of global cement production.

Bringing Sustainable Cement to Japan

The primary goal of the collaboration is to deploy low-to-zero-carbon cement plants in Asia. Fortera intends to begin the deployment from the Island nation. For the deployment, Fortera has already identified multiple potential sites for these plants.

The partnership will focus on introducing Fortera's ReAct green cement to the region. Fortera's green cement uses industrial carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions as a resource for significant decarbonization in the cement sector.

Commitment to Reducing Emissions

Sumitomo Corporation is committed to addressing the cement industry’s 8% share of global emissions. The company sees this partnership as an opportunity to drive sustainability without compromising industry standards.

Sumitomo’s venture capital arm, Presidio Ventures, also participated in Fortera’s Series C funding earlier this year, displaying a deep commitment to advancing decarbonization.

Fortera’s Revolutionary ReCarb Technology

Fortera’s ReCarb technology is designed to transform CO2 emissions into high-performance cement. The result is a product with 70% less embodied carbon than traditional cement. ReCarb’s unique process enables the production of cement with a reduced carbon footprint, meeting industry standards like those set by ASTM International. The innovative green cement is also suitable for blending with regular cement to improve strength and workability.

A Future of Zero-Emissions Cement Production

The collaboration positions Fortera’s ReCarb process as a scalable solution for decarbonizing the cement industry. Powered by renewable energy, ReCarb can achieve zero-emissions cement production. This makes it a promising option for addressing the global climate crisis while transforming the cement sector.

Strategic Expansion into Asia

Ryan Gilliam, CEO of Fortera, emphasized that this partnership will help the company establish a strong presence in Asia. As Fortera continues to grow its domestic pipeline, this strategic move will expand its global reach and enhance its impact on global decarbonization efforts.
