Hy2B Wasserstoff Launches Testing of 5-MW Electrolyser in Bavaria

The German consortium Hy2B Wasserstoff GmbH has initiated testing of a 5-MW electrolyser in Bavaria. According to the Bavarian Ministry of Economic Affairs, Regional Development and Energy, regular operations will commence by the end of 2024.  

This electrolyser is located in the municipality of Pfeffenhausen and will utilize electricity generated by a nearby 10-MW solar park operated by the cooperative BuergerEnergie Niederbayern eG.  

Once fully operational, the facility is expected to produce an impressive 440 tonnes of green hydrogen annually. This hydrogen will be transported to refuelling stations in the Munich area, primarily serving buses in regional transport systems, thus contributing to sustainable mobility solutions. 

In addition to serving local transport needs, the green hydrogen produced at the site will support a planned Hydrogen Technology Application Centre, which is set to be established adjacent to the electrolyser. 

This centre aims to foster further innovation and development in hydrogen technologies. Furthermore, if demand for hydrogen increases, there is potential to double the electrolyser’s capacity to 10 MW, enhancing its production capabilities. 

Hy2B Wasserstoff was founded in 2020 specifically to develop this facility, and its shareholders include notable entities such as Hynergy Invest GmbH, BayWa AG, and Tyczka Hydrogen GmbH. 

The districts of Landshut and Munich, along with energy cooperatives Niederbayern eG, Isar eG, and Unterhaching eG, are also key stakeholders in this promising initiative.
