Masdar Signs Investment Agreement for 1GW Wind Farm in Kazakhstan
Masdar signs an agreement to develop a 1GW wind farm in Kazakhstan, marking a significant step in the country’s clean energy transition.

Masdar, the UAE’s clean energy leader, has made significant progress in developing a 1GW wind farm in Kazakhstan. The project reached a milestone with the signing of an Investment Agreement, marking the company’s inaugural venture in Central Asia’s largest economy.

The agreement was signed on the sidelines of COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan. Key figures included H.E. Nurlan Baibazarov, Kazakhstan's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Economy, and Nurlan Zhakupov, Chairman of Samruk-Kazyna. Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi, CEO of Masdar, and H.E. Almassadam Satkaliyev, Kazakhstan’s Minister of Energy, also attended.

Project Details and Impact

The wind farm will be located in Kazakhstan's Jambyl region and include a 600-megawatt-hour Battery Energy Storage System (BESS). Masdar, W Solar, Qazaq Green Power (a Samruk-Kazyna Group company), and the Kazakhstan Investment Development Fund are co-developing the project.

This project marks a major step in Kazakhstan’s clean energy journey. It will become one of the largest wind farms in the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) region. The wind farm will power around 300,000 homes in southern Kazakhstan and reduce CO2 emissions by 2 million tonnes annually.

Timeline and Strategic Importance

Construction of the wind farm is expected to begin in Q1 2026. Upon completion, the project will contribute significantly to Kazakhstan’s energy transition goals, which include increasing the share of renewables in the energy mix to 15 percent by 2030. The country aims to reach 50 percent renewables by 2050 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2060.

Masdar’s Role and Future Goals

The project aligns with the UAE’s ongoing support for Kazakhstan’s climate action plans. This agreement builds on the commitments made at COP28 to advance the country’s renewable energy sector.

Since its inception in 2006, Masdar has played a key role in the UAE's sustainability vision and aims to expand its renewable energy portfolio to 100GW by 2030.
