Matrix Renewables Enters UK Market with Major Battery Storage Partnership

Matrix Renewables, the renewable energy platform backed by TPG Rise, has announced its official entry into the UK energy sector through a new partnership with Green BESS Developments (UK) Limited. Together, the companies will advance the development of two large-scale standalone battery energy storage system (BESS) projects in Scotland.
The projects, situated at Eccles and Kilmarnock, are situated strategically on key electricity transmission corridors between England and Scotland. On completion, the sites will supply a total capacity of 1GW/2GWh, contributing significantly towards the resilience of the UK's grid and clean energy transition.
Commitment to Long-Term Growth in the UK
Sergio Arbeláez, Managing Director for Europe and Latin America at Matrix Renewables, said, “Matrix is excited to continue growing our European portfolio, announcing our entry into the UK aligns with our investment strategy and further diversifies our technology mix"
He added, “The UK is the most advanced market in Europe for standalone battery storage, and these projects anchor our in-country operations and development capabilities with a meaningful presence in the flexible generation space. Backed by our experienced UK team, we are committed to playing a long-term role in supporting and investing behind the UK’s transition to a low-carbon energy system”

Strengthening UK Renewable Ambitions
This alliance is a milestone for Matrix Renewables as it ventures into the UK's vibrant energy storage and renewable power market.
The business plans to build more than 2GW of additional capacity in generation and storage in the next three years. This growth will take the form of investments of over £1 billion and is forecast to create dozens of jobs for the region.
Both Eccles and Kilmarnock projects are planned to be on stream by 2027. Matrix is currently in advanced discussions with a prominent UK-based Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) firm to finalize project delivery.
Plans are also underway to lock in the technical design, commercial power offtake agreements, and financing structure for the developments.
