A group of Wyoming ranchers in Laramie County has launched an innovative carbon storage project called Meriden Carbon. This new venture combines local land ownership with energy expertise, offering a unique approach to tackling climate change.

Empowering Local Landowners

Meriden Carbon stands out by prioritizing local landowners. The project offers ranchers ownership stakes and decision-making authority, giving them control over land development. This approach aims to capitalize on the growing demand for carbon storage solutions while benefiting the local community.

The Steamboat Carbon Storage Hub

In early 2023, the group formed Meriden Carbon and kicked off the Steamboat Carbon Storage Hub project. The hub is set to become one of the largest carbon storage projects in the United States. It will utilize over 100,000 contiguous acres of land, positioning Wyoming as a key player in the carbon storage market.

Securing Government Support

The project’s self-funded approach has gained considerable attention. The Department of Energy’s Office of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management (FECM) recently extended its support through a $9 million CarbonSAFE Phase II cooperative agreement.

This funding will allow Meriden Carbon to collaborate with leading institutions such as the University of Wyoming, the Energy & Environmental Research Center, the Payne Institute for Public Policy, and Advanced Resources International.

A Bright Future for Carbon Storage in Wyoming

Jeff Kummer, founder and CEO of Meriden Carbon, expressed excitement about the project’s potential. He shared that partnering with legacy ranching families in southeast Wyoming had been one of the highlights of his career.

Kummer believes the Steamboat Carbon Storage Hub will position Wyoming as a leader in solving global energy challenges and advancing sustainable solutions.

Community Impact and Legacy

Local rancher Jon Kirkbride emphasized that the Steamboat project represents more than just a business opportunity. He noted that the project aligns with his family's legacy and promises a brighter future for the local community.

The Steamboat initiative embodies Wyoming's pioneering spirit and determination to build a sustainable future.

Looking Ahead

Meriden Carbon’s ambitious project is not just about carbon storage—it’s about building a sustainable future for Wyoming’s ranching communities. With growing support from both the local community and federal agencies, the Steamboat Carbon Storage Hub could play a pivotal role in addressing the global need for carbon storage solutions.

As the project progresses, Meriden Carbon is set to make significant strides toward establishing Wyoming as a leader in the carbon capture and storage industry.
