Mitsubishi Electric Partners with VTT to Advance Direct Ocean Capture Technology

Mitsubishi Electric has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with VTT- Northern Europe’s largest research and development institute based in Finland. The agreement entails cooperation regarding developing nature-positive technologies, including direct ocean capture (DOC).

This high-profile collaboration between two well-established organizations signals trust in the potential of DOC technology and the meaningful impact it could have in the global fight against climate change

Led by Antti Arasto, Vice President of VTT, this shared initiative will focus on advancing technology that will remove carbon dioxide directly from seawater.

This prominent partnership between the two organizations reflects a strong belief in the potential of DOC technology and its significant role in the global battle against climate change.

Spearheaded by Antti Arasto, Vice President of VTT, this collaborative effort will concentrate on enhancing technology to extract carbon dioxide directly from seawater.

The world's oceans are grappling with acidification, which disrupts the water's pH balance due to excessive CO2 absorption from the atmosphere.

This heightened acidity threatens marine ecosystems, threatening aquatic species and economic activities, such as the fishing industry.

In response to this urgent environmental issue and other related challenges, Mitsubishi has partnered with VTT as part of its comprehensive sustainability strategy.

This collaboration aims to advance carbon capture and removal by developing Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) technology.

The corporation has established a target to achieve net-zero value chain emissions by the fiscal year ending March 31, 2051. Its strategic initiatives extend beyond its current operations, focusing on developing synergistic businesses that will drive growth while delivering benefits for both nature and society.
