Mumbai Metro Becomes India’s First Carbon-Neutral Metro Line
Mumbai Metro becomes India’s first carbon-neutral mass transit system with UNFCCC certification for Metro Lines 2A and 7.

Mumbai Metro has set the record when it comes to certification of metro lines 2A and 7 as carbon-neutral for 2022–2023. This remains the very first such certification in India, as reported by Times of India. The achievement has been bestowed by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) under its Climate Neutral Now campaign.

Sustainable Practices in the Center

What supported carbon neutrality accreditation were sustainable architecture, energy efficiency, and renewable energy sources. Counting everything from construction and operation day-to-day, each stage in which Mumbai Metro was involved in assessing and offsetting its greenhouse gas emissions. The corridors worked with regenerative braking systems, LED lights, solar power, and energy-efficient trains to lower carbon emissions.

Besides environmental targets, the Mumbai Metro has an environment in which first- and last-mile connectivity is promoted, along with shared and nonmotorized mobility. Such an integrated approach helps to lower dependency on fossil-fuel-based transport and makes life greener for urbanites.

Recognition by International Bodies

The Climate Neutral Now program by UNFCCC helps organizations to measure and reduce their carbon emissions. As they align with this initiative, the metro department helps in strengthening the position of the country’s goal to be net-zero by 2070.

The certification helps in understanding the efforts made by Maharashtra government and the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) to enable the growth of infrastructure as well as sustainability hand in hand. It also helps in showing how green mobility is reducing the risk of living in tier 1 cities.

Setting the Precedent for Other Cities

Since urban transport is responsible for a large percentage of the emissions in Indian cities, the achievement of Mumbai sets the precedent for other cities to follow with replicable green transit models. As more metro projects become a reality all over India, the focus on sustainability only promises to become stronger.

Mumbai Metro's Transition into carbon neutrality is not only a celebration of accomplishment, but also an imperative for cleaner, wiser urban transit across the country.
