Natron Energy to build $1.4 Billion sodium-ion battery plant in Edgecombe County

Natron Energy, Inc., unveiled its plans to build the first sodium-ion battery Giga factory in the United States. The company plans to locate the facility in Edgecombe County, North California.
The facility being constructed by the company mentioned that the facility will have the capacity to produce 24 gigawatts (GW) of Natron’s revolutionary sodium-ion batteries annually at full capacity.
Natron’s sodium-ion batteries provide superior power density, increased cycle life, a domestic U.S. supply chain, and distinct safety advantages compared to other battery technologies, according to the press release.
The facility, spread across 1.2 million square feet and located at the 437-acre Kingsboro mega site, will represent Natron Energy’s $1.4 billion investment.
This investment is partially supported by a Job Development Investment Grant (JDIG) that was approved by the state’s Economic Investment Committee.

“Today is a momentous day for Natron Energy. This flagship manufacturing facility will dramatically accelerate our efforts to deliver sodium-ion batteries to customers who are hungry for safe, reliable, and environmentally responsible energy storage solutions,” said Colin Wessells, Founder and co-CEO of Natron Energy.
He added, “After evaluating over 70 sites across 9 states, we found that North Carolina, with its leadership in the clean energy revolution, would make the perfect home for this project. We are proud to partner with the state on this ambitious project to deliver high-quality jobs to the community while advancing the electrification of our economy. We look forward to joining the Edgecombe County business community.”

The Edgecombe County facility will allow Natron to increase its production capacity by 40 times, speeding up the commercialization of its technology while creating over 1,000 high-quality local jobs in the clean energy sector once fully operational.
Natron’s sodium-ion batteries, which are currently the only UL-listed options available, will serve various industrial power markets, including data centres, mobility, EV fast charging, microgrids, and telecommunications.
This project will benefit from a Job Development Investment Grant (JDIG) approved by the state’s Economic Investment Committee today. Over its 12-year duration, the grant is projected to boost the state’s economy by $3.4 billion.
The JDIG allows for a potential reimbursement of up to $21,747,000 over 12 years. Additionally, the project is expected to receive support from the new North Carolina Megasite Readiness Program, which aids local governments in preparing and upgrading industrial sites.
Edgecombe County is anticipated to apply for a $30 million grant from this program, subject to approval by the same committee that oversees JDIG awards.
