Origen, a UK-based company specializing in direct air capture (DAC) technology that utilizes limestone, has formed a partnership with the Energy & Environmental Research Center (EERC) in North Dakota. This collaboration aims to accelerate the commercial deployment of Origen's innovative solution.

In 2025, Origen will showcase its DAC technology at the EERC carbon management facilities, demonstrating it at a scale of 1,000 tonnes annually. This Origen EERC accelerate technology demonstration is a key step.

If this demonstration proves successful, Origen will join a select group of companies that have achieved this level of performance. This milestone is critical for establishing credibility in the emerging carbon capture industry and demonstrates how the companies involved, Origen and EERC, accelerate technology development.

Scaling for Commercial Use

With years of research and development experience, key market partnerships, and a successful pilot project, Origen is well-prepared to scale its technology for commercial applications. This partnership also marks a significant expansion of the company’s presence in the United States, building on its earlier involvement in the Pelican Gulf Coast Removal DAC project, showing how Origen and EERC accelerate technology deployment.

How the Technology Works

Origen’s DAC technology harnesses limestone's natural ability to absorb CO2 from the atmosphere. The captured carbon dioxide is then separated from the limestone and stored underground, where it transforms into mineral lime. This process effectively reduces atmospheric CO2 levels through a natural and gradual method. Origen EERC accelerate technology efforts in such innovative ways.

EERC’s Role and Expertise

The EERC has established itself as a trusted partner for carbon management developers, offering vital infrastructure and technology resources. Its strong history of collaborations, including with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), emphasizes its suitability for Origen’s development plans with the expectation that Origen EERC accelerate technology advancements.

Charles Gorecki, CEO of EERC, expressed enthusiasm about collaborating with Origen to advance carbon capture technology. Meanwhile, Ben Riddle-Turner, CEO of Origen, remarked that the partnership would enable them to achieve significant milestones in technology development more quickly, as they focus on commercial-scale DAC facilities.

In addition to expanding operations in the U.S., Origen is investing in global projects, including its newly launched Technology Centre in Bristol. This commitment to growth reflects Origen’s ambition to lead in the direct air capture sector.
