Statkraft Seeks Approval for 2.1 GW Baltic Offshore Wind Farm

Statkraft has submitted a planning application for the 2.1 GW Baltic Offshore Delta North bottom-fixed offshore wind farm in the Baltic Sea.  

Located in Sweden’s economic zone, the Delta North wind farm is situated approximately 100 kilometres east of Stockholm and 55 kilometres east of Sandhamn Island. 

The project has the potential to produce around 8 TWh of electricity annually, which would meet 40% of Stockholm County’s current electricity consumption.  

Delta North aims to address the growing electricity demand in the transport sector and support the transition to a low-carbon industry, helping to meet climate targets.  

Additionally, the wind farm will help rectify the imbalance in the Stockholm region, which currently generates only about 10% of its electricity needs. 

The proposed wind farm will consist of up to 105 bottom-fixed turbines positioned far out at sea to minimize visibility from land.  

Delta North will not be visible from the mainland or the inner archipelago, where most of Stockholm County’s population resides. It will have limited visibility from select areas in the middle archipelago. Some visibility may occur from the outermost islands of the outer archipelago. 

This site has been identified by Swedish authorities as suitable for offshore wind, as outlined in the proposed revision of the Marine Spatial Plans, and is expected to coexist with other ocean users without conflict. 

With water depths ranging from 40 to 80 meters, this area is considered the only suitable location for large-scale bottom-fixed offshore wind near Stockholm.  

Depending on the final landfall and grid connection, the wind farm may integrate with hydrogen or e-fuel technologies to enhance grid stability and address intermittent power production challenges. 

Statkraft has submitted its application to the Ministry of Climate and Economic Affairs in accordance with Swedish law governing the economic zone.  

Following the submission, the government will review the application and consult various agencies before reaching a decision. 

As a significant producer of renewable energy, Statkraft is actively engaged in the Swedish power market and aims to develop 6-8 GW of offshore wind capacity in Northern Europe by 2040.
