Quinbrook Expands Supernode Battery Project with Stanwell
Quinbrook and Stanwell expand Queensland’s Supernode battery project to 750MW, reinforcing clean energy reliability, job creation, and one of Australia’s largest BESS initiatives.

Quinbrook Infrastructure Partners, a global investment manager specializing in energy transition infrastructure, has announced the signing of a Stage 3 offtake agreement with Stanwell Corporation for its Supernode battery storage project in Qubeensland.

The expansion adds 250MW/4-hour of Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) capacity, bringing the total to 750MW and 2,540 GWh, positioning Supernode among the largest battery installations in Australia’s National Electricity Market (NEM). The Stage 3 agreement is subject to final investment approval, with financial close expected by 30 September 2025.

Supporting Clean Energy and Economic Growth

Brian Restall, Quinbrook’s Managing Director and Regional Leader for Australia, said, “Supernode will provide a significant economic boost to the Moreton Bay region, creating jobs and supporting many local businesses in the shire. Today’s announcement is proof that Queensland is still open for business and further repays the trust and confidence that Moreton Bay Regional Council showed in Quinbrook and our Supernode concept from the very beginning”.

Enabling Firmed Renewable Supply

Stanwell CEO Michael O’Rourke welcomed the collaboration with Quinbrook and highlighted the project's role in energy reliability.

Mr. O’Rourke stated that battery projects such as Supernode allow for the capture of solar energy during the middle of the day, which can then be stored for use in the evenings when energy demand is at its peak.

He explained that the proposed Stage 3 of the Supernode project would fulfill this purpose while also generating additional employment opportunities through the site’s expansion. According to him, it is initiatives like these that will help Stanwell continue providing affordable, reliable, and sustainable energy for both Queensland and the National Electricity Market.

Stanwell plans to utilize the stored energy to meet the needs of its commercial and industrial customers aiming to reduce their carbon footprint.

Operations and Future Collaboration

Quinbrook is also looking into options to engage Stanwell's Asset Maintenance Company (SAMCo) for maintenance and operational services for the expanded Supernode facility, marking a closer alignment between the public and private sectors.

Supernode is a major part of Queensland’s push to become a “green superpower,” highlighting its focus on clean energy and job creation.
