SEB Publishes Its Latest Green Bond Report on Sustainable Water Management

SEB published the latest issue of its Green Bond report, focusing on increasing investments in sustainable water management.

According to the report, there are significant growth opportunities in technologies that help society and corporations address the global water crisis.

Thomas Thygesen, the Head of Strategy and Sustainability in SEB Equity Research, said, “It is fair to say that over the past 1-2 years doubts have crept in about the clean energy transition after the surge in investments from 2020-2022 gave way to flatlining in 2023-2024.”

He added, “In our view, this is likely noise driven by a change in political priorities. The reason why we think the green energy transition is unstoppable has never been about the politics – it was always about the revolutionary technological potential of renewable energy.”

The report also notes positive advancements in the sustainable finance market, with a total of USD 929 billion in new sustainable debt transacted globally by July 2024, marking a USD 70 billion increase compared to the same period in 2023.

This growth has been driven by North America and Supranational Institutions, with an over 20% increase in sustainable bond issuances.

However, sustainability-linked bonds (SLBs) are facing challenges. The issuance of new SLBs has dropped to its lowest level since 2020, with many issuers struggling to meet sustainability targets.

Gregor Vulturius, the lead scientist and advisor at climate and sustainable finance at SEB said, “A third of European SLBs have either missed or are on track to miss their sustainability targets, with the majority of KPIs that are not on track to meet their targets relating to greenhouse gas emissions.”

Additionally, the report includes contributions from Global Water Intelligence on the importance of triple global investments in water management and a market outlook for water technologies from SEB Climate and sustainable finance.
