SolarBank Corporation Announces Development of 2.4 MW Community Solar Project in Nova Scotia

SolarBank Corporation has officially announced the continued progress of its community solar development pipeline with the introduction of the Sydney Project, a ground-mounted solar power project in Nova Scotia.
This project, totaling 2.4 MW DC, is poised to generate 2,730 MWh of clean energy annually. This amount of power is enough to supply approximately 221 homes for an entire year, while also eliminating 1,900 tons of CO2 emissions annually, equivalent to removing 415 cars from the road.
The Sydney Project is valued at approximately $4.57 million and is a collaboration between SolarBank and AI Renewable Flow-through Fund, with SolarBank acting as the lead developer and builder.
The project will also benefit from the expertise of Trimac Engineering, a trusted local Nova Scotia engineering firm. SolarBank continues to expand its expertise in Canada as the community solar market develops, building on a history of over 50 MW of community solar projects completed in the United States.
A Strategic Project for Renewable Energy Goals
The Sydney Project contributes to SolarBank’s growing community solar portfolio. It is expected to generate recurring revenue through multiple streams, including long-term operation and maintenance (O&M) contracts, alongside upfront EPC revenue generation. The project is currently in the permitting and interconnection phase, with construction planned for the Spring of 2026.
Dr. Richard Lu, President and CEO of SolarBank, said, “This project underscores SolarBank's significant expertise and strategic vision in helping to drive Canada's renewable energy transformation.”
He added,”With a proven track record of over a decade in community solar, commercial, and industrial projects, we're proud to provide solutions on Nova Scotia's ambitious renewable energy transition to deliver meaningful value for stakeholders and communities alike."
The Sydney Project is not just a technical achievement but also a critical economic driver, offering over $1.36 million in electricity savings for local residents over its lifetime, while creating local jobs and supporting the Province's net-zero goals.
Contributing to Nova Scotia’s Renewable Energy Ambitions
The Sydney Project is SolarBank’s second community solar initiative in Nova Scotia, supporting the province’s goals of 80% renewable energy by 2030 and net-zero emissions by 2035. Backed by federal and provincial support, the project allows renters, businesses, and homeowners to benefit from solar energy through bill credits, without installing rooftop systems.

Projected Impact of the Sydney Project:
The Sydney Project is set to generate 2,730 MWh of clean energy annually, reduce 1,900 tons of CO₂, support local jobs with a $4.57M investment, and deliver over $1.36M in customer savings, enhancing Nova Scotia’s energy security.
However, it faces risks including interconnection approval, contract and permit acquisition, financing availability, and potential changes in government support.
