Synergy Completes Second Kwinana Battery in Western Australia

Synergy, an energy retailer, has completed the second Kwinana Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), marking a major milestone in Western Australia’s clean energy transformation. This addition to WA’s energy infrastructure follows a renewable energy record in November, strengthening the state’s commitment to sustainability.

The $661 million Kwinana BESS stage two adds 800 MWh storage and 200 MW capacity with 288 battery modules. It will power 450,000 Perth households for up to four hours, improving grid stability and energy security.

The project generated 200 construction jobs, key to WA's plan to expand renewable energy and reduce coal reliance. The Kwinana big battery and Synergy’s storage systems effectively integrate additional rooftop solar and wind energy.

Alongside completing the Kwinana Battery, Western Australia’s main electricity grid achieved a new renewable energy milestone, with renewables making up 85.1% of the energy on the South West Interconnected System (SWIS). This accomplishment underscores the state’s progress in growing its renewable energy capacity, which has doubled since 2017. Renewables in the grid have increased from 14% in 2017 to over 34% in 2023, demonstrating WA's clean energy success.

Government Commitment to Clean, Affordable, and Reliable Power

Reece Whitby, Energy Minister said, "With the completion of Synergy's second Kwinana battery, we are delivering on our promise to provide Western Australians with power that is clean, affordable, and reliable."

He added, "It won't just soak up excess rooftop solar and onshore wind during the day - it will provide electricity in the evening, when the sun doesn't shine, and the wind doesn't blow. As we continue to retire State-owned coal-fired power, large-scale storage will play a critical role in enabling a smooth transition and backs in households seeking to benefit from rooftop solar."

Synergy’s second Kwinana battery marks a crucial step in the Cook Labor Government’s $5.4 billion investment in WA’s energy transition. Next year, the Collie Battery Energy Storage System will enhance renewable energy capacity and support grid stability.
