Taiwan’s Department of Industrial Technology Announces Innovations at the Greater South Startup Expo

The Department of Industrial Technology (DoIT) under the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) has unveiled 30 innovations from various start-up teams in the Taiwan Research-Institute Entrepreneur Ecosystem Program (TREE) and Research and Development (R&D).

Meet Greater South, a startup exposition in Asia, included institutes such as the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) and Metal Industries Research & Development Centre (MIRDC) in the Discovering Technology Treasures section, which talked about the growing technological advancements in southern Taiwan-driven by digital and net-zero transitions.

Over the past three years, the southern Taiwan industries have experienced an increase in investment nearing NT$32 billion with an output exceeding NT$43 billion due to the help of the Technology Development Program (TDP)

DoIT has been working to improve the 5G innovation ecosystem in Kaohsiung’s Asia New Bay Area by aligning with local industry requirements and utilizing TDP results to drive digital transformation and encourage innovation.

Digital transition, net-zero transitions, and startup incubation are three of the achievements that the exposition showcased.

In terms of digital transition, Kaohsiung, an industrial hub for screw and nut production in Taiwan, has seen improvements in production efficiency and quality through the integration of smart technology.

The Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) has provided funding for advancements, such as the 5G AIoT system developed by MIRDC, which has been effectively deployed at Fang Sheng Screw.

In net-zero transition, ITRI has created face wash and hand cream products by converting pineapple leaves into cosmetic ingredients.

This eco-friendly technology has been licensed to IMEI Chemical Enterprise, a cosmetics manufacturer.

In start-up incubation, NeoPower Technologies, a National Taiwan Normal University startup, developed a "Smart EV Charging System" that optimizes charging power and time for electric buses.

The company plans to install five additional charging stations in Kaohsiung by the end of the year, which will serve over 145 electric buses.
