Tokyo Metro Co., Ltd. has taken a significant step toward achieving its environmental goals by signing a solar virtual power purchase agreement (PPA) with JERA Co., Inc. and its subsidiary JERA Cross Inc. This marks the first collaboration between Tokyo Metro and the JERA Group aimed at reducing carbon emissions and advancing a sustainable energy future.

The solar virtual PPA allows Tokyo Metro to virtually procure renewable energy from JERA’s off-site solar power plants. Tokyo Metro will receive non-fossil certificates for 2.4 million kWh annually from JERA’s 1,200 kW solar facilities through the agreement. The energy supply will help Tokyo Metro offset carbon emissions from its headquarters, reducing approximately 936 tons of CO2 annually.

The PPA will last 25 years, starting in December 2024, supporting Tokyo Metro’s broader sustainability initiatives. By securing renewable energy, Tokyo Metro can meet its zero-emissions targets and contribute to building a decarbonized society.

Tokyo Metro aims for carbon neutrality through its Metro CO2 Zero Challenge 2050, targeting a 50% emissions reduction by 2030. It is implementing energy-efficient technologies and diversifying energy procurement through solar, wind, and hydro PPAs, including its sixth with JERA Cross.

Integration of Renewable Energy Data Management

Tokyo Metro has adopted advanced renewable energy data management solutions from Granular Energy, a company JERA invested in October 2024. This technology allows Tokyo Metro to monitor renewable energy consumption in real-time, providing detailed hour-by-hour data by source. By visualizing this data, Tokyo Metro optimizes energy use and plans operations to achieve its sustainability goals.
