TotalEnergies and Air Liquide Partner to Boost Renewable Hydrogen Production at La Mède Biorefinery

TotalEnergies partnered with Air Liquide to produce renewable hydrogen at the La Mède biorefinery in southeastern France, marking a significant step towards decarbonizing the company’s European refineries. In addition, this collaboration aligns with TotalEnergies' broader goal of reducing carbon emissions and advancing low-carbon hydrogen production in its European operations.

The renewable hydrogen will produce biodiesel and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), supporting the growing demand for green fuels in transportation.

La Mède Biorefinery to Benefit from New Hydrogen Production Unit

Air Liquide will produce the hydrogen by recycling coproducts from the TotalEnergies biorefinery, further enhancing the facility's sustainability. This initiative will reduce CO2 emissions at the biorefinery by 130,000 tons annually. The new renewable hydrogen unit, with a €150 million investment, will begin production in 2028.

Vincent Stoquart, President of Refining & Chemicals at TotalEnergies, said “This new renewable hydrogen production project, carried out with Air Liquide, allows us to accelerate the decarbonization of our La Mède platform.”

He added, “Almost ten years after the announcement of its conversion, La Mède is continuing its transformation and is becoming a low-carbon hydrogen production center, thus contributing to the decarbonization ambition of the Provence-Alpes-Côte-D’azur region."

Masshylia Green Hydrogen Project to Complement La Mède Initiative

In addition to the La Mède project, TotalEnergies continues to develop the Masshylia project in partnership with ENGIE. The project aims to produce 10,000 tons of green hydrogen per year through water electrolysis for sustainable energy solutions.

The hydrogen will support both the La Mède biorefinery and local customers in the Fos-Berre industrial-port zone. The first 20 MW electrolyser for the Masshylia project is expected to operate by 2029, pending subsidies and authorizations.

TotalEnergies’ renewable hydrogen projects aim to decarbonize European refineries and reduce the company’s carbon footprint as part of its strategy. The company aims to cut CO2 emissions by three million tons annually by 2030 using green and low-carbon hydrogen.
