US DOE Allocates $62 Million to Support Innovation of Clean Hydrogen Technology

The US Department of Energy announced $62 million for 20 projects in 15 states to accelerate the research, development, demonstration, and deployment of next-generation clean hydrogen technologies.

The funded projects will enhance hydrogen fueling infrastructure, develop hydrogen-powered equipment for port operations, and improve the processes necessary for the efficient, timely, and equitable rollout of hydrogen technologies.

As per the announcement, among the projects are efforts to boost community engagement and ensure the benefits of the clean energy transition reach all Americans.

U.S. Secretary of Energy Jennifer M. Granholm said, “Under President Biden and Vice President Harris, America is leading the world in the development and deployment of clean hydrogen—a versatile fuel critical to reducing emissions from the most energy-intensive and polluting sectors of our economy,”

She added, “Today’s announcement builds on the historic clean hydrogen investments made possible by the Investing in America agenda and will help deliver new economic opportunities across the nation while also reinforcing America’s global leadership in clean energy technologies for generations to come.”

The DOE’s Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technologies Office (HFTO) will oversee the selected projects, which focus on five key areas:

  • Hydrogen Fueling Components for Medium- and Heavy-Duty Vehicles ($8.5 million): Four projects will develop advanced components for hydrogen fueling systems for medium- and heavy-duty vehicles.
  • Standardized Hydrogen Refueling Stations ($40 million): Four projects will create and test cost-effective, scalable hydrogen refueling stations designed for commercial-scale truck fueling.
  • Hydrogen Fuel Cell Port Equipment ($2.5 million): One project will develop and demonstrate hydrogen fuel cell-powered container-handling equipment and a mobile refueler at the Port of Oakland.
  • Permitting and Safety for Hydrogen Deployment ($7 million): Seven projects will address challenges related to the siting, permitting, and installation of hydrogen infrastructure and propose solutions.
  • Equitable Hydrogen Technology Community Engagement ($4 million): Four projects will enhance DOE's community engagement efforts, focusing on disadvantaged communities to address their concerns about hydrogen technologies and develop best practices for Community Benefits Plans.
