Carbonfuture, a carbon removal solutions provider, announced in a press release that it had inked a 7-year biochar carbon removal (BCR) agreement with Swiss Re.
The agreement focuses on biochar carbon removal (BCR), with Swiss Re committing to purchasing a minimum of 70,000 tons of BCR credits and the option for additional credits from various carbon dioxide removal (CDR) projects.
The goal of purchasing the credits is to ensure a uniform supply of “a variety of high-quality, durable CRD projects” to assist Swiss Re in achieving its Net-Zero goals.
Hannes Junginger-Gestrich, CEO of Carbonfuture, said, “By providing access to multiple high-quality carbon removal projects under a single contract, we are facilitating Swiss Re’s journey towards achieving their net-zero goals with confidence and efficiency.”

The agreement comprises a combination of carbon removal and avoidance certificates. The number of carbon removal certificates in the combination increases yearly, reaching 100% in 2030.
Tom Spencer, Environmental Management Specialist at Swiss Re, said, “Partnering with Carbonfuture allows Swiss Re to secure a reliable, long-term supply of high-quality carbon removal credits that will aid us in increasing the proportion of carbon removal in our compensation mix to 100% by 2030.”
In addition, the deal also includes a condition for “independent third party, reporting, and verification (MRV), provided through Carbonfuture’s MRV+ system”, the press release mentions.

The required BCR under the contract will be provided by Exomad Green’s Riberalta facility in Bolivia.
The green facility in Riberalta converts forestry waste into carbon-sequestering biochar, improving soil fertility while supporting indigenous communities.
Additionally, it contributes to reducing deforestation and fire risks through sustainable management of timber waste.
