China has announced plans to conduct an annual inventory of its greenhouse gas emissions, a move aimed at enhancing its carbon trading capabilities and meeting climate targets.
The government’s guidelines, published by state news agency Xinhua, outline the goal to compile a yearly national greenhouse gas inventory as part of broader efforts to curb emissions by 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2060.
As the world’s largest carbon emitter, China has not previously released annual updates on its greenhouse gas production, relying instead on submitting figures to the United Nations every five years.
The most recent submission covered 2017, revealing emissions of 11.55 billion tons, with carbon dioxide contributing over 80%.
The challenge lies in accurately logging methane emissions, constituting approximately 11.8% of total greenhouse gasses in 2017. China has acknowledged a data gap that impedes mitigation efforts.
