According to a press release, The Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market (ICVCM) announced the “first carbon-crediting methodologies that meet its high-integrity Core Carbon Principles (CCPs)”.
The announcement marks a significant step in the organization’s ongoing series of assessment decisions and the Voluntary Carbon Market (VCM) as a whole.
As part of the third series of assessment decisions, the Council approved seven carbon crediting methodologies.
This approval of carbon methodologies means that nearly 27 million carbon credits are generated by projects aimed at mitigating potent greenhouse gases (GHG).
These projects tackling the GHG gases involve capturing methane from landfill sites and eliminating ozone-depleting foams and refrigerant gases from discarded appliances like refrigerators and air conditioners.
Apart from the seven approved ones, 27 categories of carbon credit await approval. These 27 categories represent more than 50% of the market and are currently undergoing assessment.
As per the release by ICVCM, in addition to the 27 categories, other methodologies related to landfill gas and ozone-depleting substances are also being assessed.

Annette Nazareth, Integrity Council Chair, said, “This is just the beginning. We will be announcing further categories eligible for CCP-labels that meet our criteria as we continue our careful and thorough evaluation of the submitted crediting methodologies and properly consider complex issues with our expert stakeholders.”
This announcement by the Council is influenced by recent developments in the United States. The US Government’s publication of principles for high-integrity carbon credits has spurred discussions and actions within the voluntary carbon market.
Secretary Yellen’s statement, the release states, highlighted the potential for a high-integrity voluntary carbon market to facilitate significant decarbonization.
It directly referred to the work of ICVCM and its Voluntary Carbon Markets Integrity Initiative (VCMI).
As articulated in the press release by ICVCM, the state aims to raise standards in the supply and use of carbon credits.
It mentioned that the statement was referring to the work of the Integrity Council and the Voluntary Carbon Markets Integrity Initiative (VCMI).
The state intends to increase the standards in the supply and use of carbon credits, the release mentions.
