The US Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management (FECM) has announced a $49 million investment which will aid in building a carbon storage facility in Grand Forks, North Dakota. This carbon storage facility aims to support future energy initiatives in the state.
The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, which supports various infrastructure projects nationwide, made the funding for the carbon storage facility possible.

Strengthening Energy and Creating Jobs
This investment aims to improve North Dakota’s energy infrastructure and create jobs. The facility will develop cleaner energy solutions, marking the significance of the state’s carbon storage initiatives.
Senator Kevin Cramer, a member of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, voiced his support for the project. While stressing its importance for North Dakota’s energy industry, he also highlighted a focus on innovation.
Cramer claims Project Tundra demonstrates the state’s leadership in responsible energy use. He says lignite coal is a low-cost, reliable source of clean electricity for the region’s energy needs.

Job Opportunities for Locals
DCC East Project LLC will handle the construction of the carbon storage facility. This project is expected to create many full-time jobs in the area, benefiting local workers and families. It will complement the existing workforce at Minnkota’s Milton R. Young Station and the nearby coal mine, further supporting the community’s economic growth.
Carbon Storage Facility Supports National Goals
The carbon storage facility aligns with the Carbon Storage Assurance Facility Enterprise (CarbonSAFE) Initiative, which began in 2016. This initiative aims to promote carbon capture and storage technologies across the United States. By investing in projects like this, the government hopes to reduce carbon emissions and ensure a reliable energy supply for the future.
The investment in Project Tundra not only supports environmental goals but also strengthens North Dakota’s energy sector. This project shows a clear commitment to sustainable practices and job growth, making a positive impact on the local community and the environment. The future looks bright for clean energy in North Dakota, especially as it includes plans for this new carbon storage facility.
