The Port of Rotterdam is taking significant steps toward reducing emissions with a €2 million (~$2.1 million) investment in carbon capture technologies. The funding, allocated by Rotterdam’s Energy Transition Fund (ETF-R), will support the development of a new carbon capture and processing hub.
This initiative aims to cut emissions across the maritime industry, a key contributor to global carbon output.
Filtree Technology and Hybrid CO2 Capture System
The innovative project, led by Rotterdam-based Value Group, employs a hybrid CO2 capture and exhaust cleaning system, Filtree. This technology captures CO2 while removing harmful substances like sulfur, particulate matter, and oil residues from ships’ exhaust.
It addresses both environmental and health concerns caused by maritime emissions.

New Model for Carbon Capture and Reuse
The project, backed by ETF-R’s funding and supported by InnovationQuarter, sets a model for future carbon capture facilities. The Value Hub, located in the heart of the port, combines carbon capture, storage, and reuse in one framework.
This innovative system also demonstrates the potential to use captured CO2 for agricultural applications, such as enhancing productivity in greenhouses. The parallel pilot program will showcase the broader benefits of carbon capture beyond emissions reduction.

Supporting Rotterdam’s Sustainability Vision
Reinaud Struycken, senior investment manager at ETF-R, highlighted the significance of this project for Rotterdam’s decarbonization strategy. According to Struycken, the hybrid “catch & release” technology aligns perfectly with the city’s vision for a clean and sustainable future.
The initiative not only addresses maritime emissions but also offers a scalable solution that can benefit various industries, including agriculture.
Closed Loop System for a Greener Future
The Value Hub represents a closed-loop system where captured CO2 is used for productive land-based applications. This marks a key step in the broader decarbonization strategy. By linking maritime emissions reduction with carbon reuse, this project sets a new standard for carbon management.
The Value Hub can be a critical example of how industries can scale up carbon capture solutions while contributing to global climate goals.
