Air New Zealand signed an agreement with Neste to supply 23,000 tons of Neste MY Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). This is the airline’s largest SAF purchase till date. Neste will deliver the fuel to Los Angeles and San Fransisco airports where Air New Zealand will use it until February 2026.
The new agreement follows previous SAF deliveries to Air New Zealand, including shipments to LAX in 2024 and to Auckland Airport in 2022. Air New Zealand will blend the sustainable fuel provided by Neste with conventional jet fuel to meet industry specifications before use. Neste will deliver the fuel via the existing fuel supply systems at both airports, ensuring seamless integration into Air New Zealand’s operations.
Progress Toward Climate Goals
Kiri Hannifin, Air New Zealand’s Chief Sustainability and Corporate Affairs Officer, said, “This purchase represents 1.6% of Air New Zealand’s total fuel supply for our financial year 2025 meaning we will reach our SAF target for the year. It is still a very small proportion of our total fuel use but it is four times more than the volume of SAF we used in our financial year 2024, so I am very happy with the trajectory.”
She added, “Like all airlines, we urgently need to move away from our high reliance on fossil fuels as quickly as we can, and securing year-on-year higher volumes of SAF is critical.”
