European Energy announced that it had acquired grid connection approvals for nearly 500 megawatts (MW) of solar and wind energy projects across Romania.
The approvals will take the projects nearer to the ready-to-build stage.
The energy company announced that it is working to obtain the approvals for the other projects in the coming future.
As of now, the “total development pipeline for European Energy Romania now exceeds 1.5 GW of solar and wind projects”, as per the announcement.
European Energy predicts that hybrid projects, meaning a combination of solar, wind, and battery storage technologies, have the potential to drive the growth of renewable energy in Romania.
Another factor that could boost this progress is the implementation of precise regulations for guarantees of origin, which would encourage corporate power purchase agreements in the nation.

Ioannis Kalapodas, Head of European Energy’s Romania office, said, “We consider Romania a very promising market. The upcoming auction for Contract for Difference outlined in the Romanian renewable energy support scheme, totalling five GW, will unlock the implementation of more wind and solar projects.”
By the end of 2023, Romania had 11.7 gigawatts of renewable energy capacity, either constructed or with approval for grid connection, based on information from the International Renewable Energy Agency.
Renewable energy, as a component of Romania’s Green Transition, offers various advantages, such as delivering cleaner and more cost-effective electricity for consumers.
In addition, it generates economic benefits for farmers, landowners, local enterprises, communities, and residents by means of increased tax earnings and the creation of new jobs in environmentally sustainable investments.
