TotalEnergies and STMicroelectronics have achieved a major Power Purchase Agreement, to supply renewable electricity to sites of STMicroelectronics in France. The deal for 15 years, which came into force in January 2025, will add 1.5 TWh to the grid from green electricity and support STMicroelectronics’ carbon-neutralization efforts towards reaching carbon neutrality by 2027.
Renewable Power from Wind and Solar Farms
TotalEnergies will also supply an additional 75 Mw of renewable power to STMicroelectronics through two new wind and solar farms. The energy will include a guarantee of origin and services to provide a steady supply of green electricity, despite intermittency.
The deal is the first of its kind in France, as a 15-year PPA, and the majority was due to the increase demand that took place for long-term, reliable clean energy solutions. Environmental and community impact of the wind and solar projects have also been a crucial factor behind the success of this agreement.
TotalEnergies: A Committed Partner in Decarbonization
Sophie Chevalier, Senior Vice President of Flexible Power & Integration at TotalEnergies, expressed her delight at signing the agreement with STMicroelectronics, stating that it showed the company’s ability to provide long-term, innovative clean power solutions tailored to customer needs. She also emphasized that TotalEnergies aims to be a preferred partner in supporting tech industry players in their decarbonization efforts, highlighting that the agreement showcases their commitment and capabilities.
Geoff West, EVP and Chief Procurement Officer at STMicroelectronics, said, “This first PPA in France marks yet another important step towards ST’s goal of becoming carbon neutral in its operations (Scope 1 and 2 emissions, and partially scope 3) by 2027, including the sourcing of 100% renewable energy by 2027.”
He added, “PPAs will play a major role in our transition, and we have already signed several to support ST’s operations in Italy and Malaysia. Starting in 2025, this PPA with TotalEnergies will provide a significant level of renewable energy for ST’s operations in France, which includes R&D, design, sales and marketing and large-volume chip manufacturing.”
