At the COP29 climate conference in Baku, Azerbaijan made history by becoming the first country to receive the ISO 20121 Certification for Sustainable Event Management and Delivery. An award ceremony on November 18 at the Azerbaijan Pavilion celebrated the achievement.
Key figures, including UNFCCC officials, COP29 Azerbaijan Operating Company leadership, and strategic contractors attended the award ceremony. Narmin Jarchalova, Chair of the COP29 Azerbaijan Operating Company and Chief Operating Officer, alongside Zaur Farzaliyev from TÜV Austria Azerbaijan, the auditing company responsible for the certification, emphasized the importance of corporate integrity and the company’s commitment to sustainability.
Azerbaijan is the first host country in COP history to receive the ISO 20121 certification before the event’s conclusion. The COP29 Azerbaijan Operating Company completed a three-stage audit, evaluating both pre-event preparations and on-site operations during the event.
ISO 20121 is a global standard that guides event organizers, suppliers, and stakeholders in delivering sustainable, responsible events. The framework emphasizes long-term benefits and focuses on reducing negative environmental impacts, fostering social inclusion, and ensuring economic sustainability.
