Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC), the largest oil explorer in India has collaborated with global energy major BP to boost production from its biggest oil field, Mumbai High field, as reported by Reuters. BP would be the technical service provider under the deal, leveraging upon its expertise to raise oil and gas production from this strategic energy resource lying off India’s west coast.
BP’s Goal: Up to 60% Increase in Production
BP agreed to boost output from the Mumbai High field by as much as 60%. The discovery was made in 1974, and peak production was attained in March 1985 at 471,000 bpd. But the trend had been negative, and its production had been dwindling in the years till it reached the level of approximately 134,000 bpd in April 2024. BP aims to reverse this decline, leveraging its global experience in optimizing output from mature oil fields.
ONGC’s Strategy to Boost Oil and Gas Output
India is the third-largest oil importer and consumer in the world. It has always been unable to unlock its potential in oil and gas production. The government has been working actively to rev up output growth and reduce reliance on imports. In June 2024, India’s government indicated that ONGC was exploring partnerships with major international oil companies to boost production. BP’s technical support comes as part of this broader effort to revitalize India’s energy sector.

India’s Push for Foreign Investment in Energy Exploration
India has been actively encouraging foreign participation in its energy exploration programs. Last year, Indian Oil Minister Hardeep Singh Puri emphasized the government’s push for global companies to help boost oil production. BP’s involvement is key to unlocking more potential in the Mumbai High field, helping achieve India’s energy goals.
BP’s tie-up with ONGC is a significant part of the long history the company has in India’s energy space. In addition to partnering with Reliance, BP has 1,900 fuel stations in India and produces oil and gas in the Krishna-Godavari basin. BP’s long history working in mature fields around the world is likely to be a big factor in the reviving Mumbai High field.
BP is not the only collaboration that ONGC has with BP. BP and Reliance Industries have collaborated to bid for offshore exploration rights in India, strengthening their position in energy.
