Exxon Mobil has announced plans to substantially boost natural gas production and supply in Guyana, after the government requested additional gas to fuel power generation and petrochemical projects in the nation as reported by Reuters. The announcement , made at an energy forum in Georgetown by Exxon’s Guyana head, Alistair Routledge, revolves around the “Wales Gas Vision,” which will see gas supplied to a range of onshore power and industrial ventures.
Gas Pipeline and Future Projects
Exxon Mobil’s Guyana expansion project includes a $1 billion pipeline, completed last year, that will transport natural gas from Exxon’s Stabroek Block to several key industrial sites. The Guyanese government will receive part of the gas to use for power generation and producing natural gas liquids.
Exxon also announced plans to build a gas processing and liquefied natural gas (LNG) offshore facility in collaboration with US company Fulcrum LNG. This facility will not only support LNG exports but also provide gas for Guyana’s Berbice region, a crucial area for fertilizer and alumina production.
Vickram Bharrat, Guyana’s Energy Minister, told Reuters that Exxon could be responsible for constructing additional pipelines that would transport the government’s share of the gas, referred to as “profit gas,” to Fulcrum LNG’s facility. Bharrat emphasized that completing a thorough assessment of the country’s gas resources is necessary before finalizing the investment decisions, although the total investment figures remain undisclosed.
Shifting to Gas for Future Growth
Guyana has long relied on oil as its primary energy source, but the government is now working on shifting towards more diversified energy options, including natural gas, to create new sources of revenue.
Minister Bharrat stated that there would be a shift towards gas utilization and monetization with a formal gas strategy to be launched later this year.

Exxon’s Expanding Role in Gas Production
Exxon and its consortium partners, including US-based Hess and China’s CNOOC , are planning to ramp up gas production in Guyana in the coming years. Among the upcoming projects is Longtail, a gas-focused venture expected to deliver up to 1.2 billion cubic feet per day of gas. Exxon plans to make the final investment decision for the Longtail project next year and is eager to start delivering gas to shore as soon as possible.
In addition, SBM Offshore has completed Exxon Mobil’s fourth floating oil production facility, which has now left Singapore. The facility will begin operations in the third quarter of this year.
