TotalEnergies, BOC, and QatarEnergy have officially launched the construction of the ArtawiGas25 facility. The facility, located in Basra, processes gas from the Ratawi field, reducing flaring and generating more electricity. The Gas Growth Integrated Project (GGIP), estimated at a $250 million investment, encompasses the facility.
The ArtawiGas25 plant will convert 50 million cubic feet of previously flared gas into valuable fuel for local power plants. Once operational, the plant will supply gas to power 200,000 Basra households, a significant milestone in Iraq’s energy progress.
The Gas Growth Integrated Project
In September 2021, Iraq launched the $10 billion GGIP to optimize natural gas resources and enhance electricity supply. The GGIP’s first phase will recover flared gas from three oil fields and develop a plant processing 300 Mcf/d. The project will use the recovered gas to generate up to 1.5 GW of electricity.
The ArtawiGas25 facility is key to the GGIP, helping reduce gas flaring and addressing Iraq’s environmental and efficiency challenges. By the end of 2025, the facility will be operational.
Julien Pouget, Senior Vice President for Middle East & North Africa, at TotalEnergies, said, “Through this project, TotalEnergies is demonstrating its capacity to deliver valuable and fast-track solutions in accordance with the government’s expectations and the country’s electricity needs. We look forward to the next GGIP milestones in the coming weeks with the start of construction of the 1 GW solar project.”

Environmental and Economic Impact
The ArtawiGas25 facility will play a key role in curbing the environmental impact of gas flaring in the Ratawi field. The project helps Iraq minimize emissions and improve sustainability by processing gas that would otherwise go to waste.
Beyond its environmental benefits, the ArtawiGas25 facility will also have a significant economic impact. During its construction, the projectwill create up to 160 direct and indirect jobs for Iraqi nationals. Once operational, the facility will provide 30 permanent jobs, supporting the local workforce and contributing to Iraq’s broader economic development.
The modular design of the ArtawiGas25 facility is innovative and flexible, offering the potential for replication in other oil fields across Iraq. This scalability could further enhance Iraq’s ability to tackle gas flaring and improve energy infrastructure in various regions.
