Wizz Air has partnered with Airbus to test Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) operations, marking a significant advancement in the airline’s environmental strategy. This initiative positions Wizz Air ahead of the upcoming EU regulations that will take effect in 2025.
Wizz Air’s proactive approach is noteworthy as the aviation industry braces for the implementation of RefuelEU aviation regulations, which form part of the EU’s broader environmental framework.
These new rules will fundamentally change airline operations within the European Union by requiring fuel suppliers at EU airports to include minimum quantities of SAF in their fuel mix, with these proportions increasing over time.
Airlines must also source 90% of their fuel from these designated airports, making early adaptation essential for ongoing operations.

Wizz Air’s trial will involve two key routes: Barcelona to Budapest and Brussels Charleroi to Budapest. Cepsa will manage the SAF supply for the Barcelona route, while World Fuel Services will oversee operations for Brussels.
Using the mass balancing method, the Barcelona route will utilize up to 16 metric tons of pure SAF in a 5% blend, and the Brussels route will implement up to 18 metric tons in a 10% blend. The project is expected to conclude by the end of the year.
Yvonne Moynihan, Wizz Air’s Corporate and ESG Officer, highlighted the importance of this cross-industry collaboration, noting that it demonstrates the aviation community’s unified commitment to reducing emissions intensity. She stated that as Wizz Air celebrates its 20th anniversary, the airline is proud to lead by example to power 10% of its flights with SAF by 2030.
Moynihan also mentioned that understanding passenger perspectives on aviation sustainability is crucial, as their insights will help shape future environmental programs. To gather this feedback, Wizz Air is launching a comprehensive passenger survey on SAF awareness and sustainability initiatives, with results to be shared through their newsletter and online link.

Throughout the trial, Airbus will provide technical guidance to optimize the integration of SAF into Wizz Air’s operations. This collaboration exemplifies how industry partnerships can expedite the adoption of sustainable practices in aviation.
The initiative represents a significant step toward achieving net-zero emissions in the industry by 2050, ensuring that millions of European passengers have continued access to efficient, sustainable air travel.
If the trial proves to be successful, it could serve as a model for other airlines seeking to integrate SAF into their operations, potentially accelerating the transition to more sustainable practices well before regulatory deadlines.
