Japan’s SAF Targets and Project Scale
As global demand for SAF increases, Japan targets replacement of 10% of petroleum based fuels by 2030. Cosmo Oil will leverage LanzaJet’s ethanol to SAF production technology, with its experience operating plants, monitoring fuel quality, and logistics. Mitsui will also add its ethanol purchasing capabilities to assist in the development of a mass-scale production facility, unveiling new opportunities in Japan’s growing biofuels market.
Production Timeline and Expected Output
Furthermore, the project will start operations at the Sakaide Logistics Base in 2029. After completion, the plant will produce about 150,000 kiloliters of SAF and 17,000 kiloliters of renewable diesel per year. This project will also assist Japan in its shift towards clean energy as well as enhance sustainable aviation fuel production to cover global demand.
