Lufthansa Group is making a move toward more sustainable air travel by extending its Green Fares to long-haul routes. Passengers on flights worldwide can now choose a more climate-friendly option, allowing them to offset their flight’s CO2 emissions and contribute to a greener future.
How Do Green Fares Work?
When passengers choose Green Fares, they offset the full CO2 emissions of their flight. This means their travel’s environmental impact is neutralized. Part of the offset comes from using Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), a cleaner alternative to traditional jet fuel, which reduces emissions during the flight.
The rest of the offset supports high-quality climate protection projects, like reforestation and renewable energy, aimed at reducing carbon emissions.

The Success of Green Fares
Since their launch in 2023, Green Fares have quickly gained popularity. Over two million passengers have already opted for this sustainable option, collectively offsetting nearly 190,000 metric tons of CO2. This is equivalent to the emissions of over 1,300 transatlantic flights, highlighting the program’s growing success and impact.
Extending Green Fares to Long-Haul Flights
In a step towards even greater sustainability, Lufthansa is now extending Green Fares to its long-haul flight network. This allows passengers on over 850,000 flights worldwide to choose this climate-friendly option.
Dieter Vranckx, Chief Commercial Officer of the Lufthansa Group, emphasized that the expansion of Green Fares is an important milestone for both the airline and the aviation industry as a whole.

A Broader Sustainability Strategy
The extension of Green Fares is part of Lufthansa Group’s larger sustainability strategy. The airline group continues to invest in fuel-efficient aircraft and develop new technologies to reduce its environmental impact. By choosing Green Fares, passengers can actively contribute to a more sustainable future for aviation, helping reduce the sector’s carbon footprint.
With Green Fares, Lufthansa is attempting to make it easier for travelers to take responsibility for their environmental impact while supporting the transition to more sustainable aviation
