Portsmouth has taken a giant leap toward a greener future with its first liquefied natural gas bunkering operation. It is one of the major breakthroughs for the city in emission reduction and better air quality.
Brittany Ferries’ Saint-Malo Refuels with LNG
The LNG transfer was as Brittany Ferries’ new electric-hybrid vessel, Saint-Malo, took in fuel from the Optimus, a bunkering barge operated by Titan Clean Fuels. Saint-Malo is one of two new hybrid ships that will soon enter service from Portsmouth, using LNG to significantly cut emissions compared to traditional heavy marine fuels.
Earlier this month, Titan received approval to conduct LNG bunkering operations at Portsmouth International Port after Brittany Ferries and Titan signed a long-term supply agreement. With this move, LNG bunkering is now available to all vessels entering and leaving the port.
Environmental Benefits of LNG
LNG has significantly lower emissions of harmful particulates compared to traditional marine fuels, which will improve air quality for local residents. The shipping industry can blend LNG with BioLNG, derived from organic waste, in any ratio to enhance decarbonization options.
Portsmouth International Port, harbour master Ben McInnes said, “We’ve worked hard to make sure we can bring safe and efficient LNG bunkering to our customers, including visits to other LNG operations in Europe, and employing independent expert consultants.”
He added, “As well as our goals to be carbon net-neutral by 2030 and emissions free by 2050, we’re also committed to improving air quality for those who live and work in Portsmouth, which we can do by providing LNG.”

Green Initiatives Expansion
Apart from LNG bunkering, Portsmouth International Port is ready to roll out a shore power system later this year, enabling ships to plug into clean electricity while docked. This will further reduce emissions, especially for hybrid vessels operating within the harbour.
With LNG bunkering now operational, Portsmouth is making great strides toward a cleaner and more sustainable shipping industry, both for the environment and the local community.
