Exxon Mobil has moved to court with a lawsuit against California Attorney General Rob Bonta and several environmental groups. The company accused them of defamation and disparagement of its advanced plastics recycling initiatives.
The lawsuit acts as a response to ongoing criticisms from environmentalists and legal actions. The criticisms revolve around Exxon’s part in climate change and greenhouse gas emissions.
The Lawsuit Against The Attorney General
Exxon claims Rob Bonta and Cotchett, Pitre & McCarthy, LLP, colluded to cause Exxon reputational damage. Exxon reports that Cotchett, Pitre & McCarthy have connections with IEJF-an, an Australian-based NGO that ties directly to the billionaire Andrew Forrest’s Minderoo Foundation , according to Reuters.Forrest’s company, Fortescue, competes with Exxon in the energy transition sector. The lawsuit alleges that Cotchett recruited US environmental groups as plaintiffs in a case against Exxon.

According to Reuters, Exxon claims that the law firm had a hand in Bonta’s polotical campaign. In response, Exxon demands undisclosed damages and a retraction of defamatory statements.
The action is an element of a larger legal dispute between California and Exxon. For context, Attorney General Bonta sued Exxon. He alleged that the company had lied about recycling restrictions for decades. He demanded that. He called for Exxon to be held accountable in contributing to the world’s pollution problem that is caused by plastics.
Plastics Recycling Technology
Exxon’s advanced recycling technology breaks down hard-to-recycle plastics into a molecular level using heat, which makes the plastics reusable. In November, Exxon announced it would invest $200 million in Texas to expand its advanced recycling capabilities.
Despite all this, environmental groups remain vocal about their criticisms of the company’s efforts. They have labeled Exxon’s recycling technology as a “myth” and a “sham.” As a result, the company recently went to court.
Exxon’s Legal Battles and Growing Tensions with California
Exxon’s legal hurdles are not limited to the lawsuit against California. The company also filed a lawsuit previously last year. The case was filed against activist investors who proposed a climate changed related shareholder resolution.
Exxon pressed forward with the lawsuit even when the investors withdrew the proposal. This move sparked concerns among climate advocates. The concern was the potential silencing of shareholder discussions on environmental issues. The case against the activist investors was dismissed but tensions remained high.
Exxon’s ongoing legal disputes, especially with California, highlight the company’s growing resistance to environmental pressures. As Exxon continues to advance its recycling technology, it faces mounting criticism and legal challenges.
