China is reportedly planning to install 2.5 gigawatts (GW) of electrolyser capacity by the end of this year. This capacity is believed to be enough to surpass the country’s annual green hydrogen production target a year before the deadline.
The capacity of the electrolyser that is targeted to be installed will produce 220,000 tons of green hydrogen each year. This amount is more than the country’s target of producing 200,000 tons of green hydrogen by the end of 2025.
An analysis by Rystad Energy revealed that Mainland China installed 1 GW of electrolyser capacity in 2023.
According to a report by Renewables Now, China is a global leader in the adoption of hydrogen electrolyser technology.

The analysis further emphasizes the geographical contrast between China’s hydrogen demand hubs in the east and its significant solar and wind power potential in the northern and northwestern regions.
For example, Inner Mongolia and Gansu have established ambitious goals for renewable hydrogen production by 2025.
In order to tackle this disparity, China is seeking to extend its hydrogen network. For instance, oil and gas company Sinopec is working on developing a 400-kilometre pipeline between Ulanqab in Inner Mongolia and Yanshan, Beijing.
The analysis mentions that hydrogen plays a crucial role in China’s low-carbon energy transition.
