On Monday, Summit Carbon Solutions, an Iowa-based private company, announced that US refiner Valero Energy Corp would participate in its proposed carbon capture and storage project.
Valero has committed to transporting greenhouse gases from eight of its ethanol plants through Summit’s pipeline, capturing 3.1 million metric tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) per year, according to Summit.
Additionally, POET LLC, the world’s largest ethanol producer, joined the multi-state pipeline project last month.
Valero’s participation expands Summit’s project to encompass 57 ethanol production facilities throughout the upper Midwest.

The proposed pipeline by Summit is set to stretch over 2,000 miles (3,218 km) across Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, and Minnesota.
Despite this, the project has encountered resistance from landowners along its path, concerned about potential carbon dioxide leaks, harm to their farmland, or the potential seizure of their land through eminent domain for pipeline construction.
