Dodai Launches E-Mobility Pilot with Addis Ababa Transport Bureau
Dodai's new electric motorcycles lined up at the launch event in Addis Ababa, showcasing the start of the e-mobility pilot program with the city's Transport Bureau.

A strategic partnership has been announced between Addis Ababa Transport Bureau and Dodai Manufacturing PLC for the pilot of an electric mobility program. The step has been taken for Ethiopia's green transport transition.

The company has now begun focusing on city-level partnerships and practical implementation following the end of its previous agreement with Ethiopian Investment Holdings (EIH).

40 Electric Motorcycles and Battery Swapping System

The pilot includes 40 donated electric motorcycles. The revelation was done at an event at Dodai’s Haile Garment facility. The bikes are provided without batteries and are fully compatible with the new battery-swapping technology. The systems facilitate quick battery exchanges and addresses concerns related to charging duration and overall battery lifespan.

Dodai’s CEO Yuma Sasaki stated, “This donation and pilot project demonstrate our commitment to modernizing urban transport, fostering sustainability, and empowering young people through e-mobility.”

From National Strategy to Local Action

The shift in the strategy came after the expiration of its Memorandum of Understanding with EIH in 2025. The former strategy was aimed at the development of better battery-infrastructure swapping technologies, but the focus was changed on having a broader sustainable transport venture.

The public rollout of the motorcycle is expected to happen in 3-4 months; the aim is to scale the urban models with its implementation in Addis Ababa first.

Green Future for the Capital

The initiative has been welcomed by the city officials; the main highlight is the reduction of emissions and a modernization of public transportation with youth employment. The pilot is expected to provide data for the shaping of electric mobility policies in the city. The partnership seeks to renew the momentum to have a cleaner and a smarter urban transportation system in Ethiopia.
