Amidst a growing rift over new fuel standards, Volkswagen announced its withdrawal from the policymaking committee of Australia’s auto lobby. The decision follows Tesla’s recent departure from the group, signaling a broader disassociation from campaigns against stricter emission regulations.
In a letter addressed to fellow members of the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries, Volkswagen clarified its stance by stepping away from the lobby group’s Policy Advisory Committee ahead of an upcoming meeting.
A company spokesperson emphasized Volkswagen Group Australia’s autonomy in addressing public and policy matters, particularly regarding the New Vehicle Efficiency Standard.
“A strong NVES is in the best interests of this country,” the spokesperson stated, underlining Volkswagen’s commitment to supporting measures aimed at enhancing vehicle efficiency.

The move underscores a deepening divide initiated last week when Tesla accused the lobby group of disseminating false information and subsequently severed ties in protest against its opposition to the proposed standards. Following Tesla’s lead, fellow automaker Polestar also withdrew from the group shortly thereafter.
Australia recently introduced vehicle efficiency standards as part of efforts to promote electric vehicle adoption and reduce emissions. However, the country stands alongside Russia as one of the few industrialized nations without such regulations in place.
While the automotive lobby group has criticized the government’s proposal, citing concerns over potential price hikes and limited vehicle options, Toyota, a major player in the market with its range of pick-up trucks and SUVs, voiced support for the lobby group’s stance. Energy Minister Chris Bowen hinted at a willingness to entertain compromises, signaling a potential shift in the government’s position.
The dispute highlights the ongoing tension between environmental objectives and industry interests, with stakeholders advocating for policies that balance economic considerations with sustainability goals.
