ENGIE announced that it signed a 7-year Biotmethane Purchase Agreement (BPA) with BASF. According to the agreement, ENGIE will supply the chemicals company with 2.7 to 3 terawatt hours of biomethane for the duration of the agreement.
Biomethane, a renewable gas, is created by fermenting organic waste from households, agriculture, or industry. Compared to fossil resources, it significantly reduces greenhouse gas(GHG) emissions.

BASF uses certified biomethane at its own sites. For instance, BASF’s sites in Germany (Ludwigshafen) and Belgium (Antwerp) utilise biomethane as an alternative to fossil raw materials in the manufacturing process.
The agreement aids the chemicals company in achieving sustainable transformation by remitting its carbon emissions.

Matthias Dohrn, Head of Global Procurement at BASF, said, “BASF and ENGIE have been working together for many years. We are increasingly using alternative feedstocks such as biomethane at the beginning of our value chain, as part of our transition towards a circular economy.”
He added, “This agreement will ensure a long-term supply of biomethane at competitive prices. We are happy to have such a reliable partner in ENGIE. ”
The purchase agreement expands BASF’s product portfolio by providing its customers with lower or zero Product Carbon Footprints (PCF) across industries.
