Japan Petroleum Exploration Co., Ltd. (JAPEX) announced that it has entered into a joint study agreement with Marubeni Corporation and PT Pertamina, an Indonesian state-owned enterprise engaged in integrated energy, and its subsidiary PT Pertamina Hulu Energi.
The study will investigate the potential for deploying bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS) at PT. Tanjungenim Lestari Pulp and Paper (TEL), a Marubeni subsidiary in Indonesia.

The plan involves capturing CO2 from biomass-fired boilers to generate power at the TEL mill. This CO2 would then be injected into synclinal aquifers in the northern Limau oil field, which Pertamina manages and is located near the TEL site.
The goal of this initiative is to initiate operations by 2030.
BECCS is a pivotal negative emission solution for reaching carbon neutrality, especially for sectors where complete decarbonization is challenging.
As it transitions from demonstration to pilot commercialisation, a successful large-scale project from this study would significantly advance the field.

In March 2021, Marubeni outlined its long-term climate vision, integrating green strategies as core elements of its Mid-Term Management Strategy, GC2024, to boost corporate value.
The carbon capture and storage (CCS) sector presents a significant opportunity for positively impacting climate change. Marubeni seeks to support sustainable economic growth in Indonesia by spearheading new initiatives through this study.
JAPEX is dedicated to advancing carbon-neutral and carbon-negative projects both domestically and globally, including this study.
The company aims to evolve as a forward-thinking energy leader and enhance its corporate value in line with contemporary environmental goals.
