The Northern Endurance Partnership (NEP) has reached a financial close, marking a key step in the UK’s transition to a low-carbon future. NEP will execute the UK’s first Carbon Capture and Storage project, aiming to permanently store 4 million tons annually. TotalEnergies, holding a 10% stake, will oversee the transportation and storage of carbon from major industrial Teesside projects.

Infrastructure for Teesside’s Carbon Capture Projects
The NEP infrastructure will enable three key carbon capture projects in Teesside: NZT Power, H2Teesside, and Teesside Hydrogen CO2 Capture. This includes onshore CO2 collection, compression units, and a 145 km offshore pipeline linked to subsea injection facilities. Construction will start mid-2025, with the initial CO2 storage operations slated for 2028.
Arnaud Le Foll, Senior Vice President for New Business – Carbon Neutrality at TotalEnergies said, “We are very pleased to be a part of this significant moment in the development of the UK’s CCS industry. NEP is a frontrunner project and we look forward to transporting and permanently storing CO2 from one of the UK’s largest industrial regions.
He added, “Our stake in NEP contributes to TotalEnergies’ objective to develop significant CO2 storage capacities in the North Sea, where we can leverage our expertise in operations and geosciences.”

Government’s Role in Supporting Net-Zero Goals
The UK government also strongly supports the initiative, with Ed Miliband, Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero, emphasizing its importance for advancing the country’s clean energy goals. “This investment launches a new era for clean energy in Britain – boosting energy security, backing industries, and supporting thousands of highly skilled jobs in Teesside and the North East. This is the Government’s mission to make the UK a clean energy superpower in action- replacing Britain’s energy insecurity with homegrown clean power that rebuilds the strength of our industrial heartlands,” said Miliband.
Furthermore, the CCS project supports the UK’s 2050 net-zero goal, promoting a sustainable clean energy sector and boosting the economy. Supported by NEP shareholders and the UK Government, the Northern Endurance Partnership enters its execution phase, targeting a 2028 start-up.
