EnEarth, a decarbonisation specialist fully owned by Energean plc, has received significant backing from the European Commission in the form of a €120 million grant for its liquefied CO2 receiving terminal at Prinos Carbon Storage. This grant, combined with the previously secured €150 million from the Greek Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF), positions EnEarth to move forward with the project’s development and initial market testing, pending the necessary CO2 storage license approval.
Ambitious Carbon Storage Capacity
The Prinos Carbon Storage project will capture up to 3 million tons of CO2 per annum reducing the industrial emissions in Greece. This will reduce 25% of Greek industrial CO2 emissions, marking a significant contribution toward the decarbonisation goals. In addition, the facility will play a role as a regional storage and thereby help reduce emissions in the industries all across the European Union. Recognized as a Project of Common Interest, it further solidifies its importance in Europe’s green transition.

EnEarth’s Commitment to Decarbonisation
Nikolas Rigas, Head of Carbon Storage at EnEarth, expressed gratitude towards the European Commission and EU Member States for their confidence in the project. He emphasized the rising demand for decarbonisation in industries like cement, refining, and chemicals, where the manufacturing process inherently produces CO2, and changing fuel or improving energy efficiency alone can’t reduce it.
Rigas said, “Prinos CO2 will store emissions from industries such as cement, refining, chemicals and more, where the production of CO2 is part of the industrial process and cannot be abated by a change of fuel or energy efficiency initiatives. Our regionally unique carbon storage facility will help protect industrial employment and competitiveness in the region.”
He added, “We are proud to be playing a leading role in helping Greece, the South-Eastern Mediterranean region and the EU reach their decarbonisation goals, building a new green industrial transition hub in Northern Greece, that will further support the local economy. Prinos CO2 will allow the north of Greece to play a leading role in the green future of Europe.”
The Prinos CO2 storage facility will drive Europe’s green transition, support decarbonisation goals, and boost local economic stability.
